An Appreciation of the Past

My youngest just celebrated her 21st birthday.  (Ugh - I can't believe the time has gone by so quickly!)  She received a wonderful gift to mark this milestone - a quilt top that was made by her great-great-great grandmother.  My daughter has a deep appreciation for vintage and antique items, and also laments that we live in such a throw-away society when so many useful things of the past are still usable and can stand the test of time.  Now, since the quilt top is probably at least 100 years old, it most certainly will not be used to cuddle while watching a thrilling movie on a cold winter's evening.  It will be hung on the wall in a quilt rack to be appreciated and admired:

And admired it is.  The patterns are so interesting and to think that the pieces were dresses, blouses and work shirts or children's clothing at one time or another.  It's also interesting to see how some of the styles and patterns are actually becoming popular nowadays.  With the gift, which is from her grandmother (my mom) was a listing of my daughter's lineage back to her great-great-great grandmother, as well as a photograph of Mary when she was a younger woman:

It makes me wonder, forty years from now, what kinds of "antiques" or "vintage" items would be passed down to our grandchildren?
