All I Need

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I've had more than my fair share this year. We actually had three Thanksgiving dinners this year: One in October with my sis Robin and her family; one last weekend at our church (3 turkey AND a ham!); and one on Thursday. Whew!

Now as the month of December is here, I plan on enjoying this season by spending time with my family and trying to celebrate the season in a way that is meaningful to us. We've decided as a family not to do gifts this year. Mainly because when I asked my kids (both teenagers mind you) what they would like for Christmas, neither could come up with an answer. They have all that they would want or need. We're not well-off by any means, but I think they GET IT. We have a roof over our heads and food in our bellies and we can pay our bills every month. We are blessed, and we know it. I can't see buying gifts "just because". I will continue to do stockings, but we want to focus on making hand-made decorations and spending more family time together. We've already begun doing that by going to movies together on Friday.

I guess I've been taking stock of our economic state in this country and watching many people spend money that they don't have just to feel good. Also, Walmart's slogan just rubbed me the wrong way: "Christmas costs less at Walmart". It saddens me that the time that should be given to acknowledge the birth of our Lord is cheapened by sales and the perfect gift. We've already been given the perfect gift - and we should cherish it 365 days of the year. And working in a public business, more people complain about Christmas and all that they have to do and how they just wish it would be over with already. That really troubles me. So I guess I'm kind of rebelling against the modern Christmas.

I long for the days when folks are satisfied with the blessings that they have, and are fulfilled by the love of their families, but more importantly, by the relationship that they have with the Lord. If that would catch on with our society, things would definitely begin to improve.

Have a wonderful day,
Liane

  1. I am so with you on your thoughts about Christmas. We are keeping it slim, slim, slim here this year. Our recent medical bills and our new medications we budget in every month have made us really reevaluate. My two youngest will be the ones we focus on mostly -- actually really only the youngest one. Let's have an old-fashioned December!

  2. Hey Lee...this one will be different for us too. Only the necessities and not a lot of fluff. Socks and underwear for everyone!

  3. Sounds like more and more people are getiing it...we have gone to one gift and the stockings...much more reasonable...not what shop owners want to here though. Dianntha
